Just got an initial job offer. How do I ask for more without any real justification? The great thing about asking for a signing bonus is that it's a great compromise for both parties since it's a one-time payment for the company but you still get a tiny boost in income. It's a good indicator that you are worth it. If I had anything else to add, it's to research what others in the same field or role (and geographical area and education) are making. You don't have to quote those numbers, but I would also try modifying Kevin's wording and mention that those numbers don't match up with what you were expecting and go from there. |

Mistake for my coworker to respond in kind to his boss? Sounds like the boss crossed a line too in my opinion. Asking someone silly/playful like that can be very, very insensitive to that person especially when both people are still very new to each other and the relationship hasn't developed or matured enough for either person (or both) to know what context is appropriate for these kinds of things. |

Should I go to an interview I don't intend to accept the job (if offered)? I've actually found that going out to companies and interviewing with them was more valuable than doing mock interviews with mentors, friends, or university resources. This was when I was a total newbie to the market though. It was a good way to test out questions and improve myself through that process regardless of whether I was offered something or not. |

How do I renegotiate my salary when new hires start in higher ranges? Focusing your skills, role, and value should be relevant to what the company does and should demonstrate how and why you deserve that salary increase from them. If you make it about them and not about yourself, they should respond better to that and be more inclined to meet your offer. |

Should I reach out for an opportunity via personal contacts or a recruiter? @DipanMehta My fear is what Mike Brown posted in his answer. It creates a conflict that potentially benefits nobody in the end. |
