At least in Europe, this can get your employer into legal problems (strict overtime laws, working unreported hours etc.), and you can even get fired. I remember a case like that from news. While US may be different, I don't think any company likes unplanned overtime.

That way OP is showing willing by going in on their day off to do extra work to try to meet the deadline, they're also clearing their indebted hours at the same time. Obviously if they have a 4 hours round-trip commute or something they might not want to do that, but if it's not going to be especially difficult to get into the office, that seems like a reasonable compromise.
