Oct 10, 2021 at 4:13 | comment | added | Ertai87 | @mxyzplk Citation needed. Most people who work 9-10 hour days, 5 days per week, do it because they can't set boundaries. People who work 14-16 hour days, 6-7 days per week, while complaining that it's having a negative effect on their health, do it because they don't want to be fired.
Oct 9, 2021 at 13:24 | comment | added | mxyzplk | That’s right. 90% of people working 14-16 hours in professional jobs do it not because the job requires it but because they lack professional discipline and boundaries. Those things go with you when you change jobs,
Oct 9, 2021 at 6:14 | comment | added | Ertai87 | @mxyzplk Would you do so by choice? The vast vast VAST majority of jobs do not force their employees to work 14-16 hour days, 6-7 days per week; OP's does.
Oct 9, 2021 at 2:38 | comment | added | mxyzplk | What makes you think the OP won’t work those hours at any other job they take?
Oct 7, 2021 at 15:32 | comment | added | Ertai87 | The fact that OP's manager asked OP to submit a report at 9pm, nonchalantly, as if he expected OP to be working that late anyway, is also a pretty dead giveaway that OP's circumstances are not by choice. I've never had a manager ask me to do work at 9pm.
Oct 7, 2021 at 15:16 | comment | added | Ertai87 | @Berend OP states that he was in the middle of a Sev-1 issue and also scheduled, unavoidable meetings with HR, and his boss plopped a huge report on his deck to be done same-day despite these other things going on, and chastised him when he was unable to complete it. Reasonable people don't do that. Based on that alone I can surmise that the rest of OP's circumstances are probably not by choice.
Oct 7, 2021 at 13:04 | comment | added | Berend | Well, it's certainly possible, but for now, speculation. Maybe OP works from home in the evenings without the manager knowing about it? (until this time, that is, because OP sent a message at 9pm)
Oct 7, 2021 at 12:54 | comment | added | FreeMan | @Berend OP states he's been working these hours long enough to have noticed the impacts on his health. It may not be intentional but it's abuse. They're abusing OPs youth, naivety, eagerness, whatever, but it's definitely abuse.
Oct 7, 2021 at 12:38 | comment | added | Berend | I'm not sure if there's any intentional abuse going on. Of course we don't know what was said exactly, but I don't see anything indicating that the manager wanted both tasks to be done. There may have been confusion about which one had highest priority, but in the end, it was OP who decided to do both.
