Apr 8, 2017 at 9:41 comment added Criggie Honesty is awesome - and seriously lacking in many businesses.
Apr 6, 2017 at 16:43 comment added njzk2 If a company says that right now they can't afford it, I'd be suspicious for the future. If I was considering 2 offers, that would weight negatively for that one.
Apr 6, 2017 at 11:53 comment added Matt Lishman If someone interviewed me and then told me they couldn't afford to take me on, I would wonder why they posted the job and interviewed me in the first place.
Apr 6, 2017 at 6:27 comment added jwg I think it is worth mentioning that you don't know how to make payroll if you take him on, and that you're not sure how you are going to make payroll in August either, without firing someone else. This will allow him to best make an informed decision about whether he wants to work for you. The phrase 'we are a bunch of clowns' could be helpful in this conversation.
Apr 6, 2017 at 5:39 comment added fluffy I'd actually prefer if a place were honest about funding issues - anecdotally, I once started at a "well-funded startup" which turned out to NOT actually be well-funded and I definitely resented the misrepresentation and the impact it had on my actual job role. Be honest about funding issues, let candidates make an informed decision.

Apr 5, 2017 at 19:56 comment added Lilienthal If you go this route you'll have to make it exceedingly clear that the "can't afford" part is due to department budgets or something similar. If the company's cash flow can't swing 2 weeks' salary that would be a huge red flag and great candidates will also be smart enough not to start working for such a struggling business.
Apr 5, 2017 at 18:58 comment added Kevin I wouldn't even mention the reason. I wouldn't even bat an eye at a June start date for a job offer received in early April.
Apr 5, 2017 at 16:28 comment added DomainsFeatured I like this one too. Honesty is key and he'll appreciate being upfront about it.
