May 10, 2019 at 10:23 | comment | added | user98768 | @SouravGhosh No, the problem isn't "bigger than $5". You're inflating OP's situation into something that is pure speculation. As far as anyone knows, based on OP's comments, there is no reason to think there is a pattern of bad communication.
May 10, 2019 at 10:07 | comment | added | GlorfSf | Did you even talk to your colleagues about this ? I would be surprised if they were all agreeing with this. If they "give" you something you neither knew about or asked for it, and then ask the money, it's called extortion
May 10, 2019 at 9:10 | comment | added | Martien de Jong | What if you'd say that you are very sorry but you are really trying to make ends meet and just spent that last $5 on food, birthday presents for your kid, need to reserve it for travel expenses or something else that's really important? Tough manager if he wants to push through for $5 in that circumstances.
May 10, 2019 at 9:01 | comment | added | Naz | @TheForestAndTheTrees Not over $5 mate.
May 10, 2019 at 8:47 | comment | added | The Forest And The Trees | @Naz It's "only" £$5 that could easily be paid by the company or CEO themselves. This is penny-pinching nonsense and the OP is perfectly valid to get out now.
May 10, 2019 at 8:39 | comment | added | Janus Bahs Jacquet | @B1313 So the best solution, in your view, is to dodge the payment and lie about it? That seems an extremely unwise approach very likely to get you into actual trouble.
May 10, 2019 at 5:53 | comment | added | G.T.D. | @SouravGhosh I am just not seeing it outside the scale of $5. If someone was trying to cover up something, then they are being awfully public about it by asking everyone to contribute $5. I think some social tact is a wise strategy here and avoiding the battle altogether. After all, if someone says his/her kids need braces, the muffler went on the family car, or his/her child is heading off to college this fall, it would be a hard climb, socially, to guilt trip them into contributing the money and not looking vicious publicly.
May 10, 2019 at 5:42 | comment | added | Sourav Ghosh | @B1313 Well, the problem is actually bigger than a ask for $5, it's about the attempted cover up of a problem, without a proper communication. Sure, some people chose to look at the other way for problems, but some choose to have their surroundings friendly and communicative and open. YMMV.
May 10, 2019 at 5:39 | comment | added | G.T.D. | I am not sure why this is the accepted answer considering I think the best solution here is to not overreact by looking for another job or getting into squabbles over office politics. Rather use some soft skills and social etiquette. Essentially, do not pay (or directly mention it ever) and anytime someone brings it up just say that you forgot and/or that your house/car/wife/kids/niece/nephew/parents/aunt/uncle/best friend/neighbor/children's school/church/volunteer organization/etc. had some unexpected expense come up that you had to cover, therefore, you are tight on money at the moment.
May 10, 2019 at 5:27 | comment | added | Sourav Ghosh | @TomGallo Yeah, and next, be ready to cancel your approved leave because someone forgot to tell you they had a deadline.
May 10, 2019 at 5:22 | comment | added | Erik | @TomGallo there's no "extra". It's just suddenly moved from "this is a party" to "this is a party you need to pay for".

May 9, 2019 at 19:52 | comment | added | user98768 | This isn't complicated at all. There is no offense that needs to be discussed. In fact, there's no reason to have any discussion aside from being surprised that it was more expensive than originally estimated. Just pay the extra and be done with it. Yes, even if it was communicated poorly.

May 9, 2019 at 12:25 | comment | added | Sourav Ghosh | @user1781290 OK, Given that many of you feel that this answer is unprofessional - I'm going to change the approach a bit. As suggested, I'll add the suggestion to talk to the manager first.
May 9, 2019 at 12:00 | comment | added | user1781290 | IMHO, while the company's behaviour is unprofessional here, so is this suggestion. Before you start quitting, you should at least talk about the offense committed (by the company against you), so the company has a chance of changing their behaviour

May 9, 2019 at 11:28 | comment | added | Sourav Ghosh | @Naz Well, I'm saying I'll gladly give that 5$, and be happy about it, if (1) someone communicates about the problem (2) acknowledge that there is a goof up happened and (3) requests to contribute to cover up for this time and at least make a statement about being careful next time. But out of blue, a directive to pay - I will not be very happy.
May 9, 2019 at 11:18 | comment | added | Naz | @SouravGhosh Nah mate it's just $5.
May 9, 2019 at 11:07 | comment | added | Sourav Ghosh | @Naz There are categories of bad leadership. However, here the attempt is to throw someone else under the bus. Not all the aspects are same and can be treated equally. Sure - deciding not to buy a coffee machine for the common area is also a bad move from a leadership but not of the same degree.
May 9, 2019 at 10:44 | comment | added | Naz | @Sourav Ghosh If it's one incident how on earth does it portray a clear picture? and are you saying this type of "bad leadership" is rare and will only ever happen to the OP in this company. If you left a company every time management did something stupid, would you ever be in a job more than 20 minutes. Life is to short to sweat the small stuff like $5.
May 9, 2019 at 10:34 | comment | added | 520 says Reinstate Monica | @Naz it's not so much the incident as much as it is the attitude that management has towards leadership that is the big red flag. The incident is just exposure of said attitude.
May 9, 2019 at 10:33 | comment | added | Sourav Ghosh | @Naz It can be only one incident, but it portrays a clear picture of the management stance. In case of tricky situations, which is this one, it performed poorly, and given any future critical / crisis situation, what stops this from being repeated? How long shall we wait to establish a pattern? Life is too short my friend. :)
May 9, 2019 at 10:11 | comment | added | Solar Mike | Given the attitude shown in this case by management what else are they about to F**k up? plus 1...
May 9, 2019 at 10:10 | comment | added | Naz | I'm not saying you said quit now, but the whole idea to recommend looking for a new job over potentially one incident is overkill, otherwise every answer to every confrontational question would be to look for another job.
May 9, 2019 at 10:06 | comment | added | Sourav Ghosh | @Naz I'm not saying to quit now, that's why I'm suggesting to pay now, to settle matters for now and start looking, find a better opportunity and move on. Also, We don't know whether there are other incidents or not. we can;t guarantee there would not be.
May 9, 2019 at 10:02 | comment | added | Naz | I think is a bit of an over-reaction to start looking for a new job, the OP has cited no pattern of mis-behaviour by management, and if this is the only issue in years and the OP is happy point to is overkill.
