May 24, 2019 at 7:35 comment added J. Doe. @MiloP The whole office is quiet - and I quiet too - I don't enjoy being distracted either.
May 24, 2019 at 7:34 comment added J. Doe. @DaveG When I opt for my headphones I don't go to my bag huffing and puffing angrily murmuring - I just get on with it - as should others. I've accepted the open office space for what it is: "OPEN".
May 23, 2019 at 23:29 comment added pft221 Want to add that people have different tolerances for distraction--what works for you may not work for others. For some people "just put on headphones" is not a solution that will allow them to get work done.
May 23, 2019 at 20:31 comment added Rui F Ribeiro This makes part of being of an open office. It is hardly your problem. What I have seen terribly rude in an open office are obnoxious and loud cellular rings, conference calling and hearing music without using headphones.
May 23, 2019 at 19:01 comment added Milo P Would you describe the area where Alice sits as overall quiet or overall noisy? Does the team that sits there do mostly focus-intensive work (programming, data-related tasks) or is it more discussion-based?
May 23, 2019 at 17:51 comment added DaveG I'm a little confused because you say "when I am distracted from the technical work I do, I just get my headphone" but it sounds like you considered it rude when Alice did exactly that?
May 23, 2019 at 17:30 comment added RyanS I feel the pain, sometimes it just doesnt feel good to be told to be quiet. Some of the answers here helped me, maybe they will help you as well despite having a slightly different issue: workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/61160/…

May 23, 2019 at 17:15 comment added Lux Claridge @Hosch250 Count yourself lucky. I work in an open office next to a busy walkway and I can't wear headphones because of archaic work policies...

May 23, 2019 at 16:50 comment added user62890 FWIW, I work in a cubicle. Sometimes I need to put on headphones when people are having an extended conversation near me; no offense taken. It's just part of the job. Sometimes it doesn't bother me, sometimes I'm busy or frustrated or whatever and it bothers me more.
May 23, 2019 at 16:45 comment added dandavis what "attitude" are you bothered by? Someone trying work? She didn't even complain the 2nd time; she took it upon herself to remedy her problem. Sharing a space means being considerate to others, and from what you've described, she's being polite and considerate. Put yourself in her shoes: is it possible you speak loudly?
