Timeline for Star developer didn’t get a promotion because he isn’t a people person, so he has scaled back his contributions. How can I motivate him?

I've asked him about doing project management and he declined. The intern was offered to him and he declined. He doesn't work closely with the devs on his team." Which part of that says to: "Obvious management material"?? FWIW, I've never been in management.
Dec 3, 2019 at 12:12 | comment | added | hjf | @LawnmowerMan "He asked for a management title without any of the responsibilities of the role" now here is where I stop discussing with you because you keep saying things that weren't said, calling people names, etc. Good luck in your very obvious manager career. Unfortunately we have to tolerate the crap your kind put against lower employees. Keep climbing the corporate ladder buddy. Psychos get very far.

Did you even read the OP's question? He didn't ask for "something in return". He asked for a management title without any of the responsibilities of the role. I don't know any company that would consider that a normal or reasonable request. Are you the dev in question? ;)
Dec 2, 2019 at 23:50 | comment | added | hjf | @LawnmowerMan I still don't understand why the despective terms. Why are we calling him a "problem child" now? This person gave more than the job asked for, and when he asked for something in return, he was said no. Fine, he will limit himself to his job description. This is NOT malicious compliance or being a problematic person.
Dec 2, 2019 at 23:40 | comment | added | Lawnmower Man | @hfj If I understand you, you are saying that OP's problem child does not qualify for the label "Rock Star". OP at least called him a "star", described his work as exceptional w.r.t. to the rest of the team, says he gets compensated much better than most, and is basically carrying the team while spurning the requirements of management (including mentoring a junior dev), and demanding that the company give him a Director title without the responsibilities of the role. Sounds a lot like "special treatment" to me.
Dec 2, 2019 at 23:30 | comment | added | hjf | @LawnmowerMan it's a despective term. It's a person that, like a rockstar, demands special treatment basically (arrives late, leaves early, doesn't work with others, writes code only he can maintain, doesn't document, etc). But gives results so the company tolerates him. Doesn't seem like this is the case. This just seems like a passionate person jaded by company policy.

Dec 2, 2019 at 1:36 | comment | added | Lawnmower Man | I'm optimistic and think that good management can make most employee-employer combinations work to mutual benefit. However, this does require the employer to demand good work, and failing that, to lower compensation to an appropriate level. If the worker is unwilling to act professionally, then they will eventually decide to leave on their own, given appropriately scaled incentives. And yeah, I agree it would be good for RS and all employees to be well-rounded, but I'm not sure it's the company's job to suggest, let alone enforce it.

You did make a pre-decision to keep the developer, while I think that letting go is still an option, albeit an ultimatum. You're also the only one that suggested Rock Star's manager might be an issue. I also think a good idea would be for RS to get a hobby.
