In the vast majority of countries, ownership rights are absolute within the boundaries of the law. If one accepts this as an appropriate ethical framework (as many do), then misuse of company property is a clear ethical violation, whereas firing an employee for doing so is not. The alternative view your present in your comment neither invalidates this framework, nor does it constitute a consistent alternative.
Dec 4, 2019 at 22:13 | comment | added | shuberman | @perenniallydisappointed By that logic, many companies should go on a firing spree for raining pink slips on employees who forget to lock their computer screen, tail the door all of which are taken seriously by the way and could cause grave financial losses if you think about it. Watching porn comes nowhere near it. You never made the suggestion but you do know the final outcome now don't you?
Dec 3, 2019 at 15:45 | comment | added | perenniallydisappointed | @mishsx, another reading issue: I never made the nonsensical suggestion that OP fire their boss. Instead, I outlined the idea that following company policy might get their boss fired - but that this might nonetheless be the most ethical option. I doubt that company policy makes allowances for accidental porrn, so whether their boss copied the files by mistake or not, is not at all important.
Dec 3, 2019 at 15:41 | comment | added | perenniallydisappointed | @Ed Heal, a reading issue: I never said porn was unethical. I said porn is arguably unethical, i.e. it may be considered unethical. If you still cannot fathom this, I recommend reading up on feminism.
Dec 3, 2019 at 11:05 | comment | added | kevinSpaceyIsKeyserSöze | @Ed Heal it was edited away with inapropriate content.
Dec 3, 2019 at 9:54 | comment | added | Fildor | @EdHeal At least it has no place on a company-public file server. (Except your company is "in the industry")
Dec 2, 2019 at 20:27 | comment | added | Ed Heal | Anyway why is porn unethical?
Dec 2, 2019 at 19:22 | comment | added | Ed Heal | The post does not mention porn. Why do you think those images was porn?
Dec 2, 2019 at 17:11 | comment | added | shuberman | We gotta shake this attitude of the following everything in the book and going around firing people. We are all humans at the end of the day and even though I like to tackle the approach directly we should not jump to conclusions whether the person copied those files intentionally. I mean there is no way to gauge a person's intention that's what I am trying to say. And so when you go about firing people for their silly mistakes like copying porn in this case you're being passive about it. letting the person know about his mistake and giving a chance to improve is a universal law everyone knows
