They taught me one thing: if an appointment is critical (not all of them are), do whatever is necessary to be on time. If you had to be at the outskirts of London, with danger of traffic jams etc., book a hotel for the previous evening and stay close to your target location. This gives you extra flexibility and another layer of security, apart from all the other good advice here.
