I personally don't like the idea of software patents (though the idea of copying a competitor's complex UI 1:1 including fonts makes me a little queasy--I tend to agree with OP on this one), but saying "nobody cares" isn't true. A great many lawyers do care. And by the way personal ethics do matter, otherwise why have them?
