I've only read the first portion of it, but I ran across this article recently, and this is definitely what I was running into when trying to get back into software in the US: https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20210727-the-rise-of-never-ending-job-interviews?utm_source=pocket-newtab . Basically it seems to be common now, at least for more mid- to senior-level positions, for people to be interviewed time and time and time again, by up to 10 or 20 total interviewers; andinterviewers. And even if everything's going spectacularly with the vast majority of the interviewing team, all it seems to take is just one person among themother individual waking up on the wrong side of the bed that morning to waste a good 40+ hours' worth the effort. This aspect of it is not because of the expat thing - it affects the workforce in general - but it certainly can be an obstacle when trying to repatriate back in.

I had a similar experience as you, starting in 2018. I was 31 at the time. With about seven years of experience and a somewhat similar salary as you, for certain reasons, I went from the US to Japan for a year and taught English.
