If I had a mortgage and kids I wouldn't put myself in the firing line without a backup offer in my pocket. The real danger is you get a raise then go on a manager's danger list and will be let go as soon as possible anyway. It does seem crazy that the only way to get a double digit % rise is to just quit and then get re-hired later.

Nov 5, 2014 at 13:45 comment added NobodySpecial If you are in an industry where your staff are easily replacable and the job of managers is just to keep costs down then never counter-offering makes sense. Otherwise losing the team a member at a time and paying 30-100% of annual salary to recruit and train replacements every few years can get expensive
