I hear that after a couple of years the call-center guy became a project manager with the company. The sound-guy was in his fifties when he started as a tester.

When I first started my job search and put my resume out there, I got 10 times more offers for testing positions than for development, just because I had that certified tester foundation level on my resume. And you won't need 3-12 month for that. A good book and an hour every day for a couple of weeks should do the trick.
