Sep 16, 2016 at 14:01 comment added user37746 @Jimbo "Assault" means to threaten someone, so a verbal statement or pointing a weapon at a person is the crime of Assault. "Battery" is actually touching or doing harm. Thus, slapping is "Assault and Battery": two separately punishable crimes. (Although it is hard to imagine battery without a preceding assault.)
