The Phone number is used to identify yourself when logging into the Desktop client etc. The Username is an addition that allows you to have Telegram-only contacts, which can send you messages through telegram, but do not know anything else about you. Thats also an awesome feature for being added into random conversations with tons of people - only the ones who have your number in that group will see it. For me an incredible advantage over WhatsApp. | |
