Explaining will ensure that you don't get the job for sure. And I'm not sure why option 2 "is going to make matters much, much worse." Seriously? If the harshest consequence of option 2 is that he doesn't get the job, then how can option 1 can be worse than option 2? Some extra embarrassment? Being embarrassed, if that happens to him, is not going to kill him. But at least with option 1, he has a chance. Also in the UK, employees and former employees can ask for a copy of any reference sent to a new employer. | |
