Configure your Mac so that it would be more like Linux. It is possible to do so. Mac in Unix.

  • Get a 2 button mouse. The major half of frustration is usually because of that single button "almighty mouse". The right button should just work.
  • Reconfigure keyboard so that CTRL works like on Linux and Windows (CTRL-C - copy, etc). This can be done in GUI settings.
  • If it is a laptop, get a proper external keyboard. The laptop keyboard is too far and too high when the laptop is placed optimally for viewing the screen.
  • User settings allow to change the scrolling direction the Windows/Linux way.
  • Change location of the home folder into /home/my_username so you can work properly command line. Even this can be done via user friendly settings.

If you have a root access, then also:

  • Install and use Brew.
  • Go through app store looking for key mappers and other productivity tools that would implement few last adjustments you may still miss.

You cannot believe or not, it is not difficult at all to make a very productive machine out of Mac you would never want to trade into anything else. It is Unix with Red Hat like stability and Windows like support for MS Office stuff your company administration cannot without. It is a grounded decision to use Mac based infrastructure in the office.

If you do not have administrator password, some choices may be more limited. But many changes on user interface do not require administrator rights and may be possible to ask administrator to make changes for you.
