Sep 25, 2020 at 16:45 | comment | added | Alex M | "To disappoint the boss is to lose face" Can you address how/why culturally it seems preferable to disappoint the boss by actually failing to deliver a product rather than discussing blockers ahead of time when called upon to do so?

Sep 24, 2020 at 20:19 | comment | added | bta | To expand on the third paragraph: admitting that you're stuck doesn't mean that you failed. Far from it. Instead, you're saying "I identified something that could cause the team/project to fail if not addressed". The real failure is in knowing about a problem and not reporting it.
Sep 24, 2020 at 19:53 | comment | added | Old_Lamplighter | @MadPhysicist I've always said if you ever wanted a Brazilian team and a German team to show up at the same time, tell the Brazilians that the meeting starts at 10:15 and the Germans that it starts at 10:45, and everyone will be there t 10:30
Sep 24, 2020 at 18:23 | comment | added | Mad Physicist | I have heard that some companies specifically hire Americans to deliver news that would otherwise be shameful, since Americans simply don't see the stigma involved. Information gets transmitted, and on one that cares loses face.

Sep 24, 2020 at 16:43 | comment | added | Anthony | Just edited to clarify countries are South Korea and Japan. What Alephero said in the comment is similar, not attacking the problem but rather wasting time debating who is in control / where is the authority to act
Sep 24, 2020 at 15:28 | comment | added | catfood | I think there's some merit in "bull by the horns" here. Acclimating them to the culture is good! And maybe say that explicitly: "I realize that in X it's bad to admit you're not always successful, but I am telling you that just like you had to learn English to work in Y you will also have to learn that we praise people who ask for help when they need it. That is a big adjustment but it's very important that you learn it."
