Apr 19, 2021 at 9:15 comment added fgysin @user_000, wait, I'm a bit confused here... You had a first, second and third interview, and then a call with the department head - and you never talked about your salary??? When did you plan to bring this up?

Apr 13, 2021 at 14:15 comment added FreeMan While "hire someone overseas" usually indicates "for less money", it's possible that your salary range was actually below what they were expecting and led them to believe, based on your salary, that you didn't have the experience/knowledge/whatever that they thought you did. Whether or not this is a fair way of judging you, this may be what's happened, and I've heard of it happening to others.
Apr 13, 2021 at 8:05 comment added Mast It's a bit of an uncouth move, but not unheard of. You're asking for a standard response, but why do you think there should be a response? It seems like they're done talking, doesn't it?

Apr 12, 2021 at 20:57 comment added WernerCD @user_000 doesn't sound like their priorities changed... sounds like their priorities became visible when they saw the salary the poster would expect. Sounds like the Poster dodged a bullet.

Apr 12, 2021 at 17:34 comment added Gregory Currie @StephanBranczyk They said that they wanted someone from overseas. That can be interpreted to be either a restrictive or non-restrictive clause (in a linguistic sense). In other words, maybe the candidate their prefer happens to be from overseas. No real point worry about it I suppose.

Apr 12, 2021 at 16:36 comment added user_000 Thanks everyone for your answers, they have all been very helpful. i wrote them and told them that I am disappointed, but moving on. They did not want to disclose any further on what was the issue. I did not ask them anyway, but I would let them speak if they wanted - they just repeated it was due to the fact that head of department wanted someone overseas. I asked also how should I feel because I was not sure on whether I stumbled upon organizational nightmare or it was just bad luck. I shall never know I guess. Anyhow, moving forward, I guess one (strange) experience more for me.

Apr 12, 2021 at 11:38 comment added Gregory Currie @BernhardDöbler Strange place. Is it likely to be India given they are looking to hire someone overseas?
Apr 12, 2021 at 11:27 comment added Bernhard Döbler @GregoryCurrie Seems to be typical in India workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/17159/…

Apr 12, 2021 at 9:36 comment added user_000 They asked where did my salary range, so they could make an offer that would not be too different than that (or that's how they explained).
