How can I best ensure applicants have requisite foundational knowledge?
@StrangerToKindness I respectfully disagree. According to the 2022 SO developer survey 94% of developers report using Git. Surely there is ascertainment bias, but I think version control is a vital part of reproducible data science and research.

This is an excellent point. I was thinking about trying to work git into the assessment, but scrapped it because of those issues. I think your approach is better for this aspect.

How can I best ensure applicants have requisite foundational knowledge?

How can I best ensure applicants have requisite foundational knowledge?
@Flater Intuitively, that is what I would expect. But some of my colleagues and some of the users on this site seem to feel that might be too harsh.

How can I best ensure applicants have requisite foundational knowledge?
@DJClayworth Yes, that is fundamentally the answer I'm looking for, but I am interested in tactful ways to implement the question as to elicit the most useful responses without scaring people away.
