If I was in the manager's place, I probably would not take a private verbal apology for public smearing that might have damaged my reputation, because it would probably not fix the damage done.
@ExactaBox What is the difference if it was work-related or vacation? Why should he be punished for taking a vacation? In a way vacation is also work-related.
@Luca one of the indicators might also be the size of the team. I am part of a team of about 40 software engineers. With that many people the pressure isn't that high.
